Rebecca & Alex

Dear Birthparent(s),

Writing this letter is unlike anything we’ve ever done. How do we find words for sharing our stories, joining together to build bridges between our lives? How can we imagine what you and the community surrounding you on this site have undergone to get here? None of our experiences are the same, and we honor the deep feeling, thought, care, resilience, heartache, and hope it takes for you to be here with us. We are humbled and thankful that you are reading our words.

Our names are Alex and Rebecca. We live in Denver and have been married for 14 years. We met in college in Charlottesville, Virginia after our friend groups moved in next door to each other. Our two groups merged into one, and we fell in love and have been best friends ever since.

We both wanted to grow our family, but it did not happen biologically. One day, on one of our walks around the neighborhood, we talked about adoption. Our hearts were immediately lighter, and we finally felt the sunshine and clarity of knowing what felt right for us, so we dedicated ourselves to this path. We have been encouraged by our families who embrace adoption and freely share their wisdom and experiences—Alex’s aunt and five of Rebecca’s cousins were adopted into our families.

Alex was born and raised in Brazil with a large extended family who live between the US and Brazil. He is an architect, employed by a progressive firm that values families and offers generous parental leave for adoptive parents. Rebecca is from the town of Blacksburg, Virginia where her parents were university teachers. Rebecca has a sister living on each coast—one an elementary school teacher with four daughters in Virginia and the other a television writer in L.A. She has a large extended family including her mom nearby in Longmont. Rebecca is a coder and software engineer, mainly working from home and running a small team within a child welfare organization. Due to the nature of her work, Rebecca’s colleagues are extra supportive of prioritizing childcare and family.

We live in the Park Hill neighborhood of Denver, with quiet streets, caring neighbors, mature trees, places to run and play, two schools a block away, and a small-town feeling. Our renovated historic family home has cozy bedrooms, lots of sunshine, and two playful, friendly cats who have adopted each other as brothers and bring us great joy. Rebecca is a musician who also loves gardening, history, and spooky stories. Alex is a talented cook and makes dinner at home most nights while learning something new on a podcast, and he is the family adventurer, always planning the next overseas trip. We drive to Longmont most weekends to spend time with family, write music, play games, watch movies, or share long conversations.

Our journey to potential parenthood has gifted us with something we did not expect: a readiness for it, a deep appreciation for the child you are considering entrusting to our family. This child will be someone we have dreamed of for many years. Thank you for reading our story.

Sincerely,
Alex and Rebecca
