Birth Parent Services
The Birth Parent Program is set up to cater to the needs of birth parents who are considering all options, not just adoption, for their unplanned pregnancy. We provide counseling and support, assuring that all options have been explored and that each parent is making the best decision for them and their child.
Birth parents may come to the agency at any stage of their pregnancy or after the birth of their child to discuss their options with one of our trained caseworkers. This is a critical decision process that requires compassion, kindness and accurate information in a safe environment.
Our birth parent program includes:
- Free services
- Lifelong support
- Options counseling around an unplanned pregnancy
- Peer counseling
- Labor and hospital support
- Choices and information on Open, Semi-Open and Closed adoptions
- Ability to select an adoptive family
- Relinquishment counseling
- Legal relinquishment
Our caseworkers help birth parents identify the best option around their unplanned pregnancy, depending on individual situations and desires. Adoption Dreams Come True collaborates with other services and agencies based on their final decision. These services include, but are not limited to, assistance for basic needs such as medical assistance, housing, food, and job search. Adoption Dreams Come True will provide referrals to other agencies and resources.
Relinquishing a child is both a voluntary and a legal process. In the State of Colorado, a parent choosing to relinquish a child for adoption must meet with a caseworker to discuss the legal and emotional aspects of the process. The counseling offered by Adoption Dreams Come True covers the legal process and paperwork, the selection of the adoptive parent(s) for the child, paternity/fathers’ rights, and support with the emotional side of the process, including feelings of fear, grief, loss and sadness. Adoption Dreams Come True’s caseworkers become each client’s advocate and provide a safe environment for our birth parents.
Once a birth parent meets with an Adoption Dreams Come True caseworker and has decided on relinquishment and adoption for their child, an adoption plan will be created. An adoption plan incorporates providing proof of pregnancy, developing a birthing plan, choosing an adoptive family, and discussing the amount and type of future contact:
- Open (direct contact with the adoptive family)
- Semi-open (indirect contact with the family/through the agency)
- Closed (no contact or identifying information with the child and family)
The legal process will then be discussed in detail with a caseworker, based on individual circumstances.
Adoption Dreams Come True offers birth parents the unique opportunity to meet with other birth parents who have made an adoption plan. Although each birth parent experiences unique and personal factors that lead them to relinquishment, many find it helpful, comforting and insightful to talk with someone who has been through the process.
